Six variations on "Rockingham"
So many beautiful melodies came to us from the 18th century at the height of the Baroque period and the dawn of the Classical Period. Rockingham is one of those melodies, of English origin.
The tune is often associated with the great hymn “When I survey (behold) the wondrous cross….” You will find some very enjoyable settings of this melody in six different settings suitable as a Prelude / Opening Voluntary and music during Protestant communion.
A couple of the variations would make very suitable introductions to a hymn set to Rockingham and the final variation would make a nice final verse harmonization. The E.M. Skinner op 531 / Lively-Fulcher (Hauptwerk) sample set from Evensong, LLC, was used to record the sound for this video. The organ is extant at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Geoergetown (Washington, DC). Enjoy! Soli Deo Gloria!
